New Toothpaste

For the last few years, I've wondered about fluoride. I've even gone so far as to ask 3 different dentists about their opinions on fluoride. Duh - what was I thinking...

Three of the organizations that treat autism also list giving up fluoride as one of the protocols.

Many of my friends and acquaintances do not give their children fluoride. Would you like to know why? If you keep reading, you'll have to make a decision about whether or not you believe this information or not. I'd like you to keep reading.

First, a few fluor
ide facts…

97% of Western Europe has chosen fluoride-free water.

Fluoride is the only chemical added to drinking water for the purpose of medication (to prevent tooth decay). All other treatment chemicals are added to treat the water (to improve the water's quality and safety - which fluoride does not do). This is one of the reasons why most of Europe has rejected fluoridation.

Contrary to previous belief, fluoride has minimal benefit when swallowed. When water fluoridation began in the 1940s and '50s, dentists believed that fluoride needed to be swallowed in order to be most effective. This belief, however, has now been discredited.

Fluoridated water is no longer recommended for babies. In November of 2006, the American Dental Association (ADA) advised that parents should avoid giving babies fluoridated water (3). Other dental researchers have made similar recommendations over the past decade

Did you know that for years fluoride was classified as a toxic waste in this country? In fact, not too long ago its only approved uses were as an insecticide and a RAT POISON! I’m not kidding.

According to the handbook, Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products, fluoride is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. It is a cumulative poison that accumulates in bone over the years. According to the Physicians Desk Reference, "in hypersensitive individuals, fluorides occasionally cause skin eruptions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, or urticaria. Gastric distress, headache, and weakness have also been reported. These hypersensitive reactions usually disappear promptly after discontinuation of the fluoride."

Given all of this scientific information, what's behind this push for universal fluoridation? Prior to 1945, fluoride was properly regarded as an environmental pollutant. It was responsible for many lawsuits against industries, such as the aluminum industry and the phosphate fertilizer industry, whose waste products contain large quantities of fluoride. This fluoride destroyed crops and animals, leading to the lawsuits. The limited public view was that fluoride was an environmental pollutant that needed to be reduced or eliminated from the environment.

As a result of clever public relations campaigns (Uh - where have we seen this before?), fluoride was transformed from an environmental pollutant to an essential nutrient necessary for producing healthy teeth. The science was poor, but the P.R. campaign was great. Being against fluoride was like being against motherhood or apple pie. Industries not only made millions from selling this environmental pollutant to water companies and toothpaste companies, but more importantly, it saved billions of dollars that would be required to clean up this environmental pollutant. CHA-CHING! Money talks...

Ever hear the phrase "dumbing us down"?

What do we do?

We avoid fluoridated water. Boiling water removes chlorine, but concentrates fluoride. We have a reverse osmosis water system and filter, which was the only system that removed fluoride as well as nitrates, at the time we purchased it, about 8 years ago.

We also avoid using non-stick kitchen ware: Non-stick coatings, such as Teflon, are made of fluoride. Scrapes, scratches and other damage can release a significant amount of fluoride into cooking. Did you know that?

Our kids do not take fluoridated vitamins or fluoride treatments at the dentist. The concentration of fluoride in water is 1 ppm, in toothpaste 1,000 ppm and in fluoride dental rinses 10,000 ppm. CRAZY!

We now use (ta-da):

Nature’s Gate Natural Toothpaste - Creme de Mint, is free of chemicals, sugar, abrasives, animal by-products (& animal testing), preservatives, artificial sweeteners or colorings… and most importantly -- fluoride!

My biggest surprise wasn't the information about how BAD fluoride is; but - rather, how much they sweeten it!

Now I understand why - especially in cases where there are ND's, we need to remove toxins. And we are.

  1. I totally agree with you on the fluoride issue. We use fluoride-free toothpaste from Young Living. The last time my 11-year-old had a dental cleaning, the hygienist said he had one of the cleanest 11-year-old mouths she'd seen in a long time.

I like the changes you've made to your blog. :)
